Fahrenheit 451, discussion of allusions in part 1

1. After having read part 1, consult the allusions handout and skim through the ones that are listed for part 1. (I handed out the allusions sheet in class, but if you don't have it, I have put the page you need for part 1 in the forms section of the JHS website. Go there to see the pdf if you can't locate the one I already gave you.)

2. Choose one allusion from the list.

3. Discuss why you chose the allusion and how it connects to the event in F451. Why do you think Bradbury chose it?

Make sure you adhere to English rules and proofread. That is also a part of your scoring. Aim for a well-developed paragraph.

  1. allusion-451 degrees fahrenheit
I chose this allusion because not only is this book named after this it represents the piro maniacs in this story. I think Bradbury chose this also because it is going to give some sort of hint later on in the story that is going to make a whole lot of sense later on in the story. 451 degrees is when paper burns, and sense this is the name of the book, I think something, Like maybe the mechanical dog will get burned at this temperature, And ray is just trying to make us wonder.

  2. I chose the allusion 451 Degrees Fahrenheit because the book is named Fahrenheit 451 and 451 degrees fahrenheit is the temperature at which books burn and they burn a lot of stuff in the book so it makes it a good allusion.

  3. I chose the allusion Clarisse because i think Bradburry put her in the story to bring in some thoughts of the older times to make the reader know that the events she was talking about did happen. I think later on in the story she will bring trust and happiness for Montag and will be a huge part of the book. I do not think she is really dead.

  4. I chose the allusion Clarisse because she was made to make Guy think bout the past and think that what there living in is wrong. and as a fireman he sees the books that information is supposedly in. and in the last part I read he had stole 20 or something different books and hid them in the air vent and took them out and was gonna start to read them and try to get a sense of what the past was about.

  5. I chose the allusion, electronic bees. They are used as a way to distract people from reality. Guy's wife is so lost the she is no longer the person Guy married. Guy notices this and also notices that she is not the only person like that. He relizes he is different and wonders why.

  6. I chose the allusion Beatty because in F451 Captain Beatty is the captain over Montag and tells Montag what has to be done as a fireman. He also frightens Mildred because he has the say in burning down anyones house. As the allusion says, Beatty "baits" Montag which I think means that he does whatever it is he has to to keep him there as a fireman.

  7. I chose the allusion Clarisse, from Fahrenheit 451 because she is a very different young girl. She makes the story very interesting! She is only seventeen, but she acts much older... I think Ray Bradbury added her to the book for that reason.

  8. The allusion that I chose was Ben Franklin. I chose him because in the book Bradbury has the history changed so that people believe that Ben Franklin was a fire starter. In real life Ben Franklin started the first fire department so he would have put the fire out, but the everyone in Fahrenheit 451 was taught that he burnt books. I think that Bradbury chose this allusion because it shows the readers how much the government controls the characters' life. They control their life so much that they would change history to get people to go along with them.

  9. I chose the allusion Beatty. The reason I chose him was because for as long as Guy can remember, he has believed whatever Beatty tells him. Beatty has controlled his whole life. Guy just thought of it as part of his job, but his job has changed his whole life, even his marriage, which he doesn't even remember when he met his wife. I think Bradbury Chose this allusion because it sort of shapes the story line of the book. Like why Guy lives his life the way he does.

  10. The allusion that I chose was the allusion 451 degrees fahrenheit because Ray Bradbury chose this as the title and there has to be a reason that he chose this title so I think that maybe later in the story there will be a reference to 451 degrees like maybe the mechanical hound will burn at 451 degrees or Montag's house will have to be burnt at 451 degrees. Another reason that I chose this is because Ray Bradbury uses 451 degrees as a reference to what the story is going to be about and the way that the story might end and he is also trying to make us wonder on how the story is going to end.

  11. I chose Clarisse, because she changed the book for me. Clarisse opened Montag's eyes to see differently than everyone else. He began to think about why everything that happens in their society happens. She's very outspoken, and always says what's on her mind.

  12. Allusion--> Electronic Bees
The small hearing aid like radios were used to block out their surroundings. The character that comes to mind most when I think about the seashells is Mildred. She uses the seashells, sleeping pills, and the t.v. walls to block out any and everything around her. The seashells filled her mind with mindless crap. She was so far gone that nothing in her “real” life mattered.

  13. The allusion I chose was Fahrenheit 451. I think this will play a huge role in this book. It is the title after all. It must have some significance. The picture on cover of the book, is a man of paper burning in a fire of books!? Weird!? Bradbury, clearly, was trying to show us how important this allusion actually is. Why else would he use it so frequently? It's weird that paper burns at 451ºF. Guy stole a book, he is a fireman... there is a man on the cover in fire!? I think we will continue to see this throughout the book. Maybe Guy will be that person on the cover to be burned in the fire?

  14. I chose allusion beatty, Guy all ways believes beatty and don't know what to think about some things, beatty stated that book's mean nothing. Guy read 12 pages of a book and they meant nothing to him. Guy also believed in clairsse and beatty is afraid of her somehow..Guy montag don't know what to do, he thinks he is not going to be a fireman anymore, his wife mildred still wants him to go to work but he doesn't want to. he wants to break things and do whatever he can do because he is mad...

  15. i choose faherinhite 451 because its must have some importance to the book, if the title is that it must mean something. The books burn at 451 degrees thats the illusion to the book title. Also believe that montag will some how figure out what is in the books and i think he will steal more books.

  16. The allusion i chose was Fahrenheit 451. This symbolizes the temperature that the books would burn. This is the title and that fact. It really makes me think about what this author was thinking when he wrote the book and titled it Fahrenheit 451. I think that the title fits perfectly and really makes everybody think about all the different ways he expresses the fire and heat. He is very clever and makes everybody catch what he does during the book
